April seemed to fly by! We would like to wish a happy 6th birthday to Jeremiah and Cameron , as well as a happy 3rd birthday to Jayden .Thank you for sharing birthday treats with the class!
This month we will be observing Memorial Day and will be closed May 28th. We’re excited to say that we’ve been invited again by the town of Lebanon to join them in the Memorial Day Parade! We like to encourage parents to participate in making the float, as well as riding with us in the parade. Your child must be accompanied by an adult if they would like to ride on the float, child care will not be provided. There is a list by the sign out sheet if you’re interested in volunteering to help create the float. Thank you to those who have already signed up!
Many of you have heard that this year’s tick season is predicted to be bad. We’ve found ticks on several children already. Due to legal reasons, we are not able to pull any ticks that are embedded in the skin. In the event of this situation we will contact a parent and it will be their responsibility to remove it. We will do our best to prevent tick exposure. The children will be staying on the playground, not the grass, and we have been checking their hair and clothes for ticks when they come inside. Make sure to check them more thoroughly when you get home. Ticks like to hide in hair, armpits, and the groin area, so beware!
There are still a few names on the list of people who need sunscreen. Please make sure you leave some in time for the warm weather. We hate to see burned faces! The warmer weather also makes everyone thirsty on the playground. Feel free to send your child in with a labeled water bottle to take outside. We’ll make sure the bottles stay filled, and you can be sure they’re staying hydrated!
Kindergarten Class
Our class started the month of April with an Easter theme just in time for the holiday. The children made fun projects such as bunny ears and pompom chicks. They also participated in dying eggs which was fun, but also involved scientific inquiry. The children discussed how the eggs would turn color in the dye, and also why the egg won’t break down like it did in our tooth decay experiment from last month. To end the week the children had an easter egg hunt which they went crazy for!
The next week we moved on to talk about zoo animals. This seemed to be a perfect lesson because many of our families went to the zoo the following week for april vacation. The children talked about how different animals in the zoo and how they lived. They greatly enjoyed the “are you as tall as a giraffe” activity. This was a math related center choice. Each child was measured against the height of a large giraffe drawn on paper. They then had to count how many inches tall they were and compare themselves to other children’s heights.
For a gross motor exercise we played elephant tracks. These were mats placed around the room like a track which they had to either hop, skip, walk, or run on.
After our zoo theme we moved on to recycling for earth day. At the beginning of the week our class made recycling bins to keep in our room. This made the kids more excited to recycle because they felt a part of something. Throughout the rest of the week we talked about ways to help the earth stay clean and ways to prevent waste. The children enjoyed using materials from our recycling bins for their personal art projects. It was fun to see what items they pulled out to use.
For the final week of April we had the theme of “April Showers.” We talked about signs of rain and things we like to do while it’s raining or in the rain. We also learned about where rain comes from by discussing the water cycle. It was amazing to see how quickly and easily some of the children picked up on this. For the whole week the children were able to play with the water table which was an activity for sensory experience. They made rain sticks which was an assembling activity and was also music related. Their favorite project surprisingly was mud paintings. This was a simple project where they were given mud to paint with, using their hands. It’s funny how something so simple can be so fun!
Next month we will be learning about may flowers, insects and fairy tales. I hope you all have a marvelous May!
